STATEMENT OF SYXKA-PEO, 12th June 2020

WE WILL NOT BE INDIFFERENT

SUMMARY OF OUR DEMANDS ON THE NEW SUPPORT MEASURES

The Executive Council of SYXKA-PEO met yesterday 11/6/2020 and examined the situation prevailing among the working people in the hotels and Leisure Centres in relation to the closure of businesses and its effects.

The Executive Council is deeply concerned that the vast majority of hotel workers, despite our repeated representations, are still not entitled to the extraordinary special unemployment benefit of 60% of the salary and are paid the minimum amount of € 360.00, because the majority of Hoteliers violated the agreement to temporarily suspend their work in the winter and did not pay 2.8% of their salary during the suspension period.

With this decision, thousands of workers are already in a miserable situation, unable to meet the most elementary needs for their survival. The drama of these workers and their families is likely to continue until the end of March 2021, as many hotels are expected to remain closed.

We reiterate the demand that all hotels that open should be obliged to pay the salary of the staff and all the similar rights regularly and that the employer should be subsidized by the state.

Only in this way will the working people be safeguarded and their exploitation by employers who already declare that they will pay 40% of the salary and all the related this percentage will be avoided.

We are also very concerned about the long delay in the payment of unemployment benefits to a large number of working people, as well as the fact that there is no easy communication in case of problems with the relevant departments of the Ministry either by phone or fax or email.

It is imperative that the support scheme be continued with the necessary changes for both hotels and leisure centres for as long as necessary, avoiding layoffs and ensuring their dignified survival as long as the measures last.

The Executive Council expects that the Ministry of Labour and the government in general will take our positions seriously and that they will be included in the new support measures to be announced.

Otherwise, our Trade Union will not remain indifferent, but will take all appropriate measures to protect workers and their families.
