The Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) on the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine

29 November 2023

The 29th November, established by the United Nations as the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine, finds the heroic Palestinian people experiencing Israel’s brutal attack on the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s attack on the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas attack is turning into genocide as it has already caused tens of thousands of deaths and injuries, including many thousands of children, while thousands of victims are missing under the rubble of their bombed-out homes.

The massacre of civilians, the indiscriminate bombing of hospitals and schools and the uprooting and displacement, are war crimes that are being committed with the provocative tolerance and support that the State of Israel and the Netanyahu government receive from the USA, the European Union and the rest of their allies.

The ongoing bloodshed makes the need to intensify our solidarity actions with the struggling Palestinian people more urgent than ever.

We demand:

  • A ceasefire to end the deaths and destruction and the provision of humanitarian aid to the population of the Gaza Strip, allowing the entry of medicine, food and fuel and the restoration of water and electricity supplies.
  • The immediate release of the Israeli hostages and Palestinian political prisoners.

The only way to ensure peace and security for the peoples of Palestine and Israel, but also in the wider Middle East, is to end immediately the Israeli occupation and colonalisation as provided for in Resolutions of the UN and to declare an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, next to the State of Israel.

We condemn the stand taken by the Cypriot Government, which, instead of denouncing Israel’s violations of international law and calling for a ceasefire and a truce, has chosen to cooperate with the forces of NATO and facilitate the use of the territory of Cyprus for military operations.

This stand exposes Cyprus and puts the government on the side of those who are covering up the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.

On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity, PEO reaffirms its support for the suffering Palestinian people and assures that them they are not alone in their struggle against genocide, and for the fulfilment of their rights to freedom and dignity.

In the context of solidarity with the Palestinian people, PEO calls on working people to participate in mass numbers in the Pancyprian Peace March that will take place on Sunday 3 December, at 15.00 in Eleftherias Square in Nicosia.
